This will be composed of protocols and procedures that will ensure timely and secure recovery of data.  For example, a 500 GB drive can be partitioned to 250GB each into Drive C: and Drive D:. Most of the files that you need to run your system can be placed in Drive C:, including program files. Other files that  you create and save like other user data can be saved in Drive D. This way, when one drive crashes or gets corrupted,  you can still save the other half. 

For regular consumers, one of the first and crucial steps that you need to have in your plan is to back-up all files., especially important ones. Creating back-up copies in other drives or putting them in the iCloud can be some things you can look into. There are also online storages where you can save some files, provided  these are not highly confidential. 

4. Secure an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS)

One of the possible causes of data loss is power outage. When the computer or laptop loses power without properly shutting it down, the data can be corrupted or lost. Having an uninterruptible power supply or (UPS) can serve as a viable backup for emergency power.  Once connected to the computer, the UPS will prevent your system for shutting down when the power goes off. 

5. Protect your hard drives from viruses and Malwares

To protect your computer against viruses and malware, you can download anti-virus and anti-malware software. For Windows, you can install Microsoft Security Essential to protect your computer. 

6. Safely eject external hard drives 

A simple act of vigilance, such as safely ejecting external hard drives can help you protect data from damages or loss.
